What's up with tantra?
Apr 29, 2021
I don’t know about you, but I have always been a bit skeptical when it comes to tantra.
Is it sexy yoga? Is it just staring into another person's eyes while naked?
There isn’t a lot of research or science behind it - but it keeps popping up in my communities and pop culture so the time has cum to see what all the fuss is about! (See what I did there?)
Okay, so - what the fuck is tantra?
Luckily I had the pleasure of discovering Sarrah Rose who is a certified Tantra, Love, and relationship coach who has helped demystify it, and I want to share some things that I’ve learned.
Let’s start with the basics...
- Can you breathe?
- Can you move?
- Can you make sound?
- Can you focus?
Great! If you can do those four things, you can do tantra! (well.. I guess it isn’t that simple..).
Tantra is the combination of those four things so you can achieve deeper, more satisfying ecstatic sex and hey, who doesn’t want that?
Sarrah took some time to answer some community sourced questions on Dr. Zhana’s Instagram that helped to further break down the mysterious world of tantra.
Q: I’m not a spiritual person. Can I still have tantric sex?
A: Yes - absolutely! Tantra can be used by anyone to have mind blowing sex.
Q: What are the benefits - if any - of tantric sex?
A: Tantric sex is a way of training your nervous system to hold more pleasure. That’s right, you heard it. MORE. PLEASURE.
Q: Can tantra be used to heal/deal with sexual trauma/shame?
A: Yes! Tantra can be used to deal with both trauma and shame. That being said, it is also recommended you work with a trauma specialist in some cases.
Q: How is tantric sex different than “everyday” sex?
A: Listen - there’s nothing wrong with everyday sex! But it can be very goal-oriented to “get off.” Tantra is about the journey; savouring every moment, expanding the pleasure, and connecting in a way where you feel truly seen.
Q: What about blue balls?
A: Science shows that ejaculation is healthy! I help teach you how to have multiple orgasms without ejaculating, and then ejaculate when you are ready.
Q: Can you only practice tantra with a partner?
A: You can practice tantra solo, with a partner, or in a group!
Q: Can tantra help people who have lost their libido?
A: Tantra can often revive lost libido. When your sex drive is down, it’s an indicator that something is wrong. Tantra can help get to the root of what is wrong on a psychological and emotional level. It is always a good idea to consult your doctor as well.
Tantra can also help you get out of your head during sex - it can help you break through mental barriers and get you feeling like your most confident self!
Q: Is it possible to practice tantric sex with a stranger?
A: Totally! Great sex comes from great connection and being present with your partner - new or old. Tantra can definitely help with that.
Q: What is the best way to learn tantra?
A: The best way is with an expert who can guide you through the process and answer any questions that come up in the process. *The practitioner does not need to be present or hands on - it can be through video or audio resources!
